Tripitaka Script of Qing Dynasty’s Imperial Edition

As the governmental edition of Tripitaka Script in the Qing Dynasty, the Tripitaka Script of Qing Dynasty’s Imperial Edition, also called Qing Tripitaka or Qing Dragon Tripitaka, was started blocking in the 11th year of the Yongzheng Period (1733) and completed in the 3rd year of the Qianlong Period (1738). It is the last governmental-pressed Tripitaka Script. The block of the Tripitaka Script of Qing Dynasty’s Imperial Edition is extant while a complete work, generally believed with high value in historical, scientific and artistic study and important position in world cultural history, is very rare.
In the 11th year of the Yongzheng Period (1733), Emperor Yongzheng gave an imperial decree to more than 130 people including high rank officials, the Han monks and some lamas to build a Sutra Collection Hall in Xianliang Temple, Beijing. The work was jointly hosted by Yunlu, Harmony Zhuang Prince, Hongzhou, Harmony He Prince and Chaosheng, abbot of Xianliang Temple to collect, collate and compile sutras. A total of 79,036 blocks were made from the 11th year of the Yongzheng Period (1733) and completed in the 3rd year of the Qianlong Period (1738). Compiled according to the order of the Thousand Character Classic from the character Tian to Ji, it consists of 7,168 sections in 1,669 volumes sealed in 724 cases.
Published and printed according to the decree of the emperor of Qing, the Tripitaka Script in the Qing Dynasty was prudently collated by numerous dignitaries to streamline and unify inconsistencies and mistakes. Thanks to its proper font and exquisite binding, the whole volume is especially solemn and valuable and has been valued by Buddhists as treasure for temples, halls and residences.

Processing

2(1) Printing
The Tripitaka Script of Qing Dynasty’s Imperial Edition published now is manually printed in compliance with the original version.
In order to guarantee a safe and quality printing and publication of the work, the company developed stringent sutra block protection measures, installed a closed printing area equipped with necessary fire-fighting and security monitoring facilities. To completely follow traditional craftsmanship, many references were consulted, and working procedures, technologies and operation modes for sutra block printing in the period of the Republic of China (1912-1949) were referred to. Renowned cultural heritage successors were appointed as professional masters to cultivate a group of high-level manual printers. Also, customized printing tables were prepared for sutra blocks. Prior to printing, block sutras were clean with scientific methods and dried by airing. After printing, they were re-cleaned, dried by airing and stored in warehouses.
(2) Binding
This time, the traditional binding mode of the Qianlong version collected in the Forbidden City is strictly followed for the new edition. The training of printers, preparation of special tools, the 11 working procedures, namely, cutting, stitching, folding, blowing, column sorting, point sticking, pressing, edge smoothing, protector installation, labeling and casing, are guaranteed to be completely consistent with the initial version made in the Qianlong Period, continuing and passing on China’s traditional craftsmanship on the brink of extinction. Manual-made alkali Xuan paper produced in Jingxian County, Anhui is applied for printing. Firm and waterproof paper synthetic materials are used for block protection and case making, realizing beautiful and tidy cases and protection boards and avoiding deformations caused by humidity. The paper, cases and glue are made of green low-carbon materials completely compliant with environmental protection requirements.
The products issued this time are 60 cases of Mahaprajnaparamita Sutra and the full set of 724-case Tripitaka Script of Qing Dynasty’s Imperial Edition.
